Amazing skill. Flexible Plywood may have solved some landscaping challenges I face. Thank you.
Glad I could help!
How much is the basic kit?

Just wondering if you have any updates on this layout and do you have a plan you can share with me?
Updates, nothing Sharable yet, but I have been promised one. Probably in November. The track is however laid and the owner is running trains while building scenery. I’m also currently in the process of drawing another plan based on this one. It’s about the same size but a more simple track arrangement on what was the mountain side. I do sell existing track plans. Please email me to inquire.
Can you talk about the pros/cons of using wood glue to make it stronger, and whether top/benchwork needs paint for stability? Your recs for tabletop material? Is homasote necessary with unitracn? Thanks!
Glue adds strength but makes making changes harder. Sealing your benchwork with paint or stain really depends on your climate. In most cases it’s unnecessary but it’s done for aesthetic reasons. 1/2 sanded plywood or better is what I recommend. Homosote should only really be used for O gauge if at all. It’s really a relic of the past at this point.
Thanks!
Wow very nice, thank you.
How much did it cost?
I typically price layouts at $50 a square ft per deck. This layout was a bit different however as there were no surfaces, grades or other subroadbed.
I buy LED chips in bulk on Amazon, fiber optics and wire to make my own LED’s for my locomotives!! Best way to go!!
Amazon is a fantastic resource but it’s not the only one. Sometimes I just use Amazon to figure out what search terms I should be using then I google that to find alternative sources. Obviously it depends on what it is but recently I was looking for linear actuators and had better results and options after I googled it. AliExpress is also a decent source if you know how to weed through the garbage.
Awesome Work!!!
Thanks!
I'm sorry to bother you again... do you have a picture to show the aligning screws on this setup? THANK YOU!
It's just clamped and screwed together. There's no alignment pins or special fasteners. I don't generally use bolts either as screws provide better alignment.
I think that is a very nicely designed and built layout. The connectors that you use for the dropper wires and the bus wire, what type of connectors are those? Regards, Paul
They are called Posi Taps. They are expensive but they save so much time that it's worth it for me. I wired this entire layout in about 2 hours. If I had used solder it would have been a whole day. www.posi-products.com/posiplug.html
@@MRBenchwork Thank you for the reply, that is much appreciated! Regards, Paul
Nice and the cost to have 10' by 30'?
That’s hard to quote without more details. Bare benchwork is usually around $50 a sq ft. Track& wiring can add $50-200 a sq ft depending on features and materials used.
That looks like it's going to be an awesome layout for that size of space. That's very similar to the size of space that I am working with.
It is the perfect single car garage layout I think. It makes great use of the space and still has comfortable walkways.
Looks great!
Thanks!
I’m so glad that model railroading changed your life for the better and I’m happy to see you be successful. As far as you not actually doing model railroading, you have at least 101 layouts to operate on. Congratulations on 13 years of growing your profession.
That’s a really nice layout. It should bring the customer years of entertainment. Nice job.
Do you call your wife Mrs. Benchwork? Another nice looking railfanning layout, some is going to enjoy running their trains on this layout.
I have yet to find a Mrs. Benchwork. I'm currently single. 😢
Can you share a rough cost estimate?
To respect my client's privacy I won't mention the specific price for any project on UA-cam but to give you a rough idea generally HO would be around $150 a sq ft with track and wiring installed BUT that can vary wildly depending on the products used and requested features. Switch machine and control panels tend to add up a lot quicker than someone using hand of god mode for example.
Great little small layout, and excellent craftsmanship as always.
Very Nice done.
Thank you very much!
Wow, very impressive. What is the radius of the curves?
20 - 24 roughly. it was a lot of railroad to squeeze into a small space. I will say however than the Well car (shipping container car) I use to test clearances looked pretty good on the curves through.
Thanks. I have a similar space ( 12'x10) And I was stressing over 22" radius
This is a nice compact layout. Could you please tell me what the radius was for the curves?
20-24. It varies a little but it's within that zone.
Very nice, very professional.
Thank you very much!
Masterpiece really nice!!!
Great workmanship, will be a excellent layout when completed
You do nice work.
Thank you!
Do you have a video to show how the lift out works? I need to make one, and yours looks good. What keeps it from wobbling from left to right? How do you keep the track aligned? Thank you.
It's essentially just a piece of 3/4" plywood with a notch cut into the edges. As for alignment I have screws that keep the bridge centered on the brackets. It's honestly so simple I don't know that it's worth making a video about it. As for track alignment, that's going to be something that the client needs to fiddle with occasionally as changes in temperature and humidity will make things move. I generally dislike making liftouts / removable sections for this reason.
@@MRBenchwork THANK YOU!
Whose tracks do you like using for HO? What about turnouts? Thank you.
I generally steer towards Peco but this layout was all Atlas and I have no complaints. To be honest I use the two interchangeably with the only hassle being track joiners as the web on the Peco track is just a little smaller. If Peco had a better variety of switches both larger and smaller I probably would stick with 100% peco all the time. I do have to give a shout out to Walthers new switches however as they are kind of impressive (they remind me of peco in a lot of ways) so they're worth a look.
@@MRBenchwork THANK YOU!
Dear mr. Benchwork, interesting layout! Especially because it’s in O scale. Love the way you’ve accomplished the level separation. Cheerio
Many thanks!
How big will the layout be?
A month later and this comment is still a head scratcher
Wow, nice looking layout. That’s going to be a lot of fun.
Glad to see a new project from MRBenchwork. I hope you share the entire construction with us.
Can’t see what you are screwing together. You should show a close up shot. I can’t follow this.
Reshooting this video is on my to do list. It’s about 8 years old if I recall.
Sent you an email. i would like to have you build me a layout
How much would it be to just design a layout. Not build it but just make a track plan?
www.modelrailroadbenchwork.com/track-planning
Looks great
Where is this car located?
Nevada state railroad museum in Boulder City Nevada.
Man, I don't make enough money to make something like you have. :)
You’d be surprised. Honestly a lot of layouts are just examples of patience and savings. Most of my clients built their train collections for decades before they called me.
What is the curve radius for the HO layout?
18” minimum if I recall but it might have been a little bigger. It was designed with marklin track so smaller radiuses are typically less of a problem. I am working on redrawing this plan with atlas track for the American audience but it’s a side project I’ll finish when I have time.
Where do I buy these modules?
Modelrailroadbenchwork.com
Whats something like that cost?
Around $50 a sqft
Would love to see the track plan!
I've always enjoyed reviewing track plans. Of course a key factor is space, which is something that isn't always easy to come by. I live in the DC metro area and cost of living is up there. The gest I could do is find a 15x45' basement that is a bit odd shopped and 15x33' usable for a layout. I have a fairly ambitious layout in progress but with seemingly endless house remodeling plans, It's hard to find enough time to get it to a near state of completion. Large layouts take a lot of time!
Nice planning Mr. B. Very, Good ideas! With the return run throughs, blue sky extention and veiws/access. Looks very functional; esthetic and comfortable or as you say user friendly. Wonderful to have that space. The linear plan affords the distance travel effect. I've drawn out a "dream" layout,☯️ying/yang, style for use of space, but it encompasses about a 40'x40' space and that's with 2' aisles. Would need about an 80'x80' for the layout; workshop & "crew" rest room. There is all kinds of ways to go with this much space. Makes one wonder? How, say a three level, maybe even a mushroom style layout may work, in that space. But, maybe simpler is better, for the visual effects. Although, the original plan, seems to accomplish the task of providing distance traveled for the operator, as well. Immersed in steps.😆 Have a good one, Mr.B. Thanks for the video.
You are spot on. With a mushroom or NOLIX design this layout could actually be squeezed into a much much smaller space. My guess is it would work in something like a 25x35 area. That said, the client has the luxury of space and prefers single deck layouts so this is why it's designed the way it is. For me personally I think the length actually will add to the realism and it will provide some interesting field of depth for photos.
So many great ideas. Great update on the shop. Thanks for all of the tips and ideas.
Thanks! This reminds me I actually need to make an update post as I've made some changes since this video went up a few years ago.
This is a amazing space to work with and I always enjoy your track plans and revisions of other’s plans and the explanations. You have a wonderful ability to make things clear and understandable and I’m hoping you will use it to do a basic tutorial on Railmodeler. I know that you are running a business and may not really have the time but the only tutorials for the program are disjointed, sketchy, old, and foreign for anyone using a MacBook Pro type computer. Please consider doing the tutorial for us Mac people and if not please recommend any tutorial you may have found that I haven’t. Thank you.
Making a review video on the few Mac based track programs is on my to do list. You rightfully pointed out however that I sort of have my hands full so I'm saving it for when I have a little more free time. Usually that's May-July.

Woow, very nice design! It will be a huge job building it, but I'm very much looking forward to the videos about this build.
Yeah building it is going to be task just due to size but the number of electronics involved in this one could make even the benchwork construction different. If I'm lucky enough to get the opportunity to build this I'm going to extensively document the entire process possibly with a weekly build vlog.
Great use of space! What is a steepest grade?
I actually don't know what the max grade is (off the top of my head) but it's less than some of the projects I've built and the trains run smoothly.
Wait, what?? 128ft? Wow, that's incredible. How fortunate to be able to work on a project like this. I hope you are able to share some of the final results.
I'm not going to count my chickens before they're hatched but I do hope I'm able to be a part of the project. It's going to be an incredible layout with a lot of new technologies and processes.
